International English Language Testing System

IELTS is one of the most widely accepted standardised English language tests and is conducted by IDP in India. It is a test taken by candidates to study in an English-speaking environment, work in or emigrate to an English-speaking country. There are two types of IELTS tests which you can attempt:

1. IELTS General:
It is the test taken by those who seek to move abroad for secondary education, employment opportunities and permanent residence (PR).

2. IELTS Academic:
It is the test taken by those who seek to enrol in undergraduate, postgraduate or any other higher level courses and also taken by individuals seeking professional recognition.

IELTS Test Format

The IELTS exam is divided into four sections - Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. It assesses your English language proficiency in these four areas. Listening and Reading are considered quantitative modules while Writing and Speaking are considered qualitative modules.

Listening

40 mins

You will listen to four audio recordings of native English speakers and answer 40 questions based on the audio recording.

Reading

60 mins

You will be given three passages and you have to answer 40 questions based on these passages (Just like a 10th Standard English exam!)

Writing

60 mins

You will be asked to write two writing tasks - Firstly, a letter or a description of data presented in a graph, table or chart. Secondly, an an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem.

Speaking

10-15 mins

Speaking Section will be in the form of an interview. You will answer a few general questions about you, talk about a particular topic based on the cue card given and answer a few followup questions based on the cue card.

IELTS Test Types

IELTS Test is conducted in two ways - Pen and Paper Based Test or Computer Based Test (CBT)

1. Pen and Paper Based Test
- Candidates opting for IELTS paper based test will be provided with an answer sheet and a pen or pencil to note down their responses.
- All IDP Exam Centres in India has pen and paper based tests available.
- Results will be available 13 days after the test date.

2. Computer Based Test (CBT)
- In a computer-based test, the candidate takes the listening, reading and writing modules using a computer. Speaking is conducted either face-to-face, or in the form of a video call.
- Only select IDP Exam Centres offer CBT 
- Results are available within 3 to 5 days after the test date.

Things to Know

Exam Fees
The IELTS test fee is 17,000 INR in India.
The One Skill Retake fee for one module is 11,300 INR.
Exam Centers

IELTS One Skill Retake
If you have not scored your target band in any one module, you can opt for the IELTS One Skill Retake where you can re-attempt that module. You can apply for One Skill Retake within two months after your IELTS Exam. Please check if your immigration consultant or university to check if they accept One Skill Retake scores, before applying.
Score Validity
An IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) is valid for two (2) years from the day you receive your results
Pen and Paper Based or CBT
We recommend that students with good typing speed, about 40 words per minute to take the CBT and students with lower typing speed to opt for the pen and paper based test. You an check your typing speed here.
Scoring in IELTS
There is no pass or fail mark in IELTS. Your score will be in a range of 1 to 9 and each organisation/country sets their own minimum score requirements.
